A step-by-step guide on how to grow English mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus).
**Step 1: Choose a Growing Method**
Decide whether you want to grow English mushrooms indoors or outdoors. Indoor cultivation allows for better control of environmental conditions.
**Step 2: Gather Supplies**
You'll need mushroom spawn, a growing medium (such as compost), containers, a spray bottle, and a humidity tent (if growing indoors).
**Step 3: Prepare the Growing Medium**
If using compost, pasteurize it to eliminate competing organisms. Fill containers with the pasteurized compost, leaving some space at the top.
**Step 4: Inoculation**
Mix mushroom spawn into the compost. Spawn can be purchased or obtained from an established mushroom grower. Distribute it evenly to encourage uniform growth.
**Step 5: Incubation**
Place the containers in a warm, dark, and humid environment. Maintain temperatures around 75-80°F (24-27°C) for about 2-3 weeks, allowing mycelium (mushroom root structure) to colonize the compost.
**Step 6: Inducing Fruiting**
After full colonization, move the containers to a cooler location with indirect light. Reduce the temperature to around 55-70°F (13-21°C) to initiate fruiting.
**Step 7: Maintain Humidity**
Mushrooms require high humidity during fruiting. Mist the growing area and maintain humidity levels around 90%. You can also use a humidity tent to retain moisture.
**Step 8: Monitor and Care**
Monitor the growth of the mushrooms. They will start as small pinheads and grow larger over time. Make sure they're getting enough indirect light.
**Step 9: Harvesting**
Once the caps have fully expanded but before they flatten out, carefully twist and pull the mushrooms from the substrate. This is usually around 3-4 days after pinning.
**Step 10: Second Flush (Optional)**
Some mushroom varieties produce a second flush of growth. To encourage this, trim away the spent mushroom stems and provide the necessary conditions.
**Step 11: Maintenance for Subsequent Flushes**
Repeat the misting, humidity maintenance, and temperature control for any subsequent flushes. You might get several harvests from the same substrate.
Remember that mushroom cultivation can be sensitive to contamination, so maintaining cleanliness throughout the process is crucial. Also, be patient; mushroom growth can take several weeks.
